Roasting Chestnuts

This weekend we picked up something entirely new to me.  I bet the title of the post already gave it away and you don’t need any help guessing what’s in this bag.

We picked up about two handfuls of chestnuts at the grocery store.

I’ve never had one and decided it was about time! Of course I had no idea what to do with them, so I had to do a google search to tell me. You start by washing the nuts.

After patting them dry,  it’s best to cut a small x into the top of each nut.  If you don’t they will explode.

We then tossed them into the toaster oven at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. Everything online says to roast them at 425 but our toaster oven is a convection oven and cooks too fast.

When the nuts were done, we peeled off the outer shell which became softer with the steam from the nuts.

The nuts were softer than I expected and were quite filling. We sprinkled them with a little salt but I couldn’t help thinking they needed to be dipped in something to make them more flavorful. I couldn’t stomach more than two or three of them.

Mishu even showed some serious interest in the chestnuts.

After a long sniff and some pawing she gave me this crazy face. She was obviously disappointed.

The chestnut experiment was interesting. I’ve heard you can roast them on the stove which I might try next year. Only next year, I won’t buy so many.  They are very filling!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!
