The Oar Towel Rack

I never knew it would be so difficult to find a pair of oars on the Cape.  I have been searching craigslist for months, and then my dad donated a used pair!

Thanks Dad!

I had an idea of mounting the oars on the side of the outdoor shower (here) for hanging wet beach towels. But the oars were a little too long so we decided that the side of the shed would do just fine.  Then came the hardest part – finding hardware to mount the oars.  We spent some time brainstorming and wandering up and down the aisles of the local TrueValue Hardware store. Nothing seemed to work until Howard found some pipe fixtures at Lowes.  He had to cut them to the correct length but the hardware seemed perfect for the oar towel rack application.

And bam! It’s almost like the oars were stained just for the side of the shed. A perfect match.

Only, my big oar dreams include white oars with racing stripes on the end of the oars.  The oars are in a naturally distressed condition from years on the water so painting them (maybe next year) makes perfect sense.

While I wanted slightly shorter oars, these ended up being the perfect length for beach towels to hang.

What colors do you think we should paint the oars?
